Life of a Teacher Blog

I loved my life of teacher days, actually, after my life of a teacher days, I was placed in a class without a teacher for 3 more days, loved it, I followed the timetable and taught the kids, found videos to help them learn, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

In Block 1 I was placed at a low-resourced school, the life of a teacher was more challenging, however, I managed to keep the learners under control and teach the content that was to be taught, I taught 3 subjects in my first block, English, Natural Science, and History.

Block 2, my school was changed due to unfortunate circumstances and I loved it, the classroom size was 27 learners as opposed to 48 as I had in my first block, the learners wanted to learn and were cooperative. The most challenging activity was classroom control, in both schools classroom discipline was a challenge, however in Durban North Primary (2nd block) it was easier to manage due to the classroom size, as a teacher you need to let the learners know that you are not their friend but a teacher and they need to listen to you, therefore, overcoming this challenge was being very firm with learners and I went around the class checking each learner work to make sure they did do their tasks, I found that then they knew I was serious and then complied.

My self-evaluation would be that I am a good teacher, I have great energy and I genuinely have a lot of love to share with the learners, however, I must be firmer, I cannot show the learners that I love them, they do take advantage. I have learned to incorporate methodology, a topic is taught, the learners’ complete tasks and I mark with them and we correct work together, certain topics in math had to be taught from the beginning as the learners had no clue.

Lovely Blog! It was so interesting to see that you got to experience 2 different schools for your prac. I can definitely relate to you when you say that the students tend to take advantage of you when you let your guard down, or when you're not firm enough. That's something I wish to work in the classroom myself.
